Full Description
{1} Medieval deserted village of Drayton. Pre Conquest until Leland settlement, possibly deserted at C16th-C18th expansion of Drayton House. References from C11th-C14th
{3, 4} There was a village at Drayton (in Lowick) from before the Conquest {6} until Leland's {7} time. There are specific references to it in records of the 11th - 14th centuries, including one {6} to a church there before 1066.{4} Depopulation probably followed the enlargement of Drayton House (the village's monor-house) and grounds
in the 16th - 18th centuries {3}; the 14th c. crenellation and making of a small park may also have had some effect. By 1576, however, 'Drayton' is become a name with a symbol on Saxton's map, and by 1642 {3} is described as "the mansion house and park of Drayton".
Siting was probably around Drayton House, ie SP 963 800. NOTE The VCH (p 243)'s chapel, extant 1685, appears from Halstend (p 159-60, 229) to be the private chapel of Drayton House.
{5} There are no surface indications of desection adjacent to Drayton House.
