Full Description

{1} Unusually for Northamptonshire, Alwinkle single township comprised two separate parishes, each of the two manors having its own church. In 1086 there were two holdings.
Analysis of the settlement is difficult because there is no early map and those of 1794 and 1816 are incomplete. The pre-enclosure road pattern is recorded on Eyre's map. At the centre of All Saint's lay the church and rectory, and manor-house. The house is depicted immediately east of the churchyard in 1816, though by then realigned askew to the earthwork enclosure surrounding it. It was demolished in c 1826. Cropmark evidence west of All Saint's church is associated with medieval pottery and stone and indicates that All Saints' settlement originally merged with St Peters'. All Saints' appears to have had a more rectilinear plan-form than today. A priest's dwelling and school house called the chantry house was established in All Saints' in the late 15th century. It was destroyed after the Dissolution and stood in Spinkes' Yard where human remains had been dug up before 1720. St Peters' manor house is lost but probably stood in Hall Close, while the parsonage was in decay by 1570. Probable expansion over adjacent furlongs in the northern part of the village. Central part of the village is more complex but the irregular shape of the tenement groups and several road widenings may be suggestive of infill on a green.
