Full Description
{1} The magnetometry survey detected a probable east-west aligned Roman settlement, which was centred around SP 6671 5852, comprised of a series of linear anomalies with conjoined sub-rectangular and rectilinear shaped anomalies, which can be interpreted as enclosures and adjoining trackways some of which appear to contain internal features such as pit-like anomalies. A series of linear anomalies may be lengths of roadside ditches.
More than one phase of activity may be represented, which may be contemporary with or pre-date the villa to the north (829/1).
{2} Fieldwalking over the area of Roman settlement to the south of the villa found a moderate quantity of Roman pottery and tile. However, the pottery from this area dated from the 1st to the mid 3rd centuries, while at the villa site to the north occupation appears to have continued into the late 3rd and 4th centuries. No tesserae or stone was recovered from this area, while there were significant concentrations from the area to the north.
