Full Description

{1} Roman Building and Kilns (SP 91129260). A small area covered with fragments of roof tile and Nene Valley type pottery, found in 1970, indicates a small building. Earlier discoveries a little to the S.E. (SP 912925) include 2nd or 3rd-century pottery, some of it kiln wasters, as well as samian ware, and pieces of burnt clay, perhaps from a kiln dome.

{2} Possible second find as further pot sherds were given to Kettering Museum.

{3} SP 912925. Possible Roman kilns were uncovered during the clearance of Lenton's Wood about 1960. Second and third century pottery (samian, grey and colour-coated ware and mortarium fragments); one or two twisted pot bases and irregular side fragments, possibly kiln wasters; and a few pieces of burnt clay dome covering material were found. At SP 90689262 (A) and SP 91129260 (B) Roman pottery and fragments of tegulae have been found. Finds now in Westfield Museum, Kettering.

{8} Both sites full on ploughland. At 'B' a small area of roofing tile and a few sherds of grey and Castor ware suggesting the site of a small building. At 'A' nothing was to be seen. Mr Spendlove was not available for consultation.
