Summary

A linear pit alignment and rectangular ditched enclosure of probable Iron Age or Roman date is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Located in a field west of Wollaston Road is a 167 metres long N-S pit alignment, extending east from which is 2 metres wide subrectangular ditched enclosure that encloses an area about 19.5 x 22 metres. From the west side of the pit alignment extend linear ditch fragments that may be further enclosures. Intersecting the south end of the pit alignment is a further pit alignment that extends E for about 57 metres. To the east are two converging linear ditches and a possible curvilinear ditched enclosure.

Full Description

{1} Cropmarks of linear ditch with appended rectilinear enclosure with entrance and second adjacent possible rectilinear enclosure. At both ends the pit alignment appears to become a pit alignment. Other cropmarks are probably non-archaeological. G Foard (13/11/1979) NCCAP:SP9164/3-7(+);

{3} A linear pit alignment and rectangular ditched enclosure of probable Iron Age or Roman date is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Bedford Borough NMP project. Located in a field about 200 metres SW of the wayside cottage on the west side of Wollaston Road and centred at SP 91682 64822 is a 167 metres long N-S pit alignment, extending east from which is 2 metres wide subrectangular ditched enclosure that encloses an area about 19.5 x 22 metres. From the west side of the pit alignment extend linear ditch fragments that may be further enclosures. Intersecting the south end of the pit alignment is a further pit alignment that extends E for about 57 metres with a 14 metres wide gap two-thirds along the distance. To the east of the N-S pit alignment are two converging 0.9 metres wide linear ditches, 75 and 61 metres long, and a possible 45 metres long curvilinear ditched enclosure.
