Summary
Hamlet of Chadstone

Type and Period (2)
Full Description
{1} The existing earthworks were abandoned by 1840.
{2} Settlement Remains (SP 853586) formerly part of the hamlet of Chadstone, lie around the existing buildings, on the SE side of a broad valley, on Boulder Clay at 78 m. above OD. The hamlet is first mentioned in Domesday Book where a total population of 14 people is recorded. Thereafter little apart from its manorial descent is known. All the existing earthworks were already abandoned by the mid C19th. In 1935 'corbel stones, the base and capital of a pillar and quantities of stone used for early buildings' were said to exist in the Rectory garden. Little remains on the ground today except for somelow banks, perhaps former close boundaries, immediately SE of Paradise Ponds, and part of a hollow-way SE of the Rectory. However onair photographs taken before recent destruction further low banks are visible E of the Rectory, and part of a hollow-way N of the farm.
{3} In the parish of Castle Ashby is the hamlet of Chadstone, now a village of six houses, but, as appears from several wells filled up, and foundations discovered in ploughing, formerly of a larger extent. In the Domesday Book a manor with one servant, nine villeins and four cottagers are recorded as working the land.
{4} Manorial descent is discussed.
{7} Earthworks are visible round the present buildings (at SP 853586), and round them remains of rig and furrow, (though whether this represents the true limits of the DMV is questionable; Bridges mentions subsequent ploughing on the site).
