Monument record 3821 - Probable Prehistoric/Romano-British Settlement, north-east of Merrydale Farm

Summary
Cropmarks of a series of conjoined enclosures visible on aerial photographs. A large amount of stone, tile and Roman pottery have also been found.

Full Description
{1} A large enclosure was seen from the air at SP 865704, by R Hollowell, in 1966
{2} A possible Romano-British occupation site was located whilst checking crop marked area seen at SP 865704. Building debris including tiles and tufa, and a variety of Romano British coarse wares was found in area SP 864703.
{3} (Area SP 86327025) Cropmarks R Hollowell, Aug 1966 and 1969. RB Sherds found by R.J Fox 15-MAY-1967
{4} Mr Fox indicated that RB sherds and occ. debris were found in an area centred to SP 86407025. This area is now under spring wheat and no surface remains were seen. Examination of Hollowell's APs (prints attached) show the main enclosure to be at SP 86297024.
{5} (SP 863702). Two parallel ditches with appended at least two rectangular enclosures and one sub-circular enclosure. Two faint rings were apparent within the latter.
