Monument record 4102 - East Carlton

Before the Conquest in 1066, Carlton was probably part of an estate centred on Cottingham. There was a single manor at Domesday but two by the 12th century, known as East Hall and West Hall.

{4} Before the Conquest in 1066, Carlton was probably part of an estate centred on Cottingham with the place name 'ceorls tun', indicating a settlement of the lowest class of freemen. It acquired independent parish status by 1254. In 1086, there was a single manor, but by the 12th century there were two, with manor-houses later known as the east and west halls. Analysis of the village plan-form is difficult because by the date of the first map in 1723 much of the village plan had been altered by imparking and depopulation. The settlement appears to have been a double row. A smaller separate element, known as Littlethorpe, was already largely deserted by 1723.
