Full Description

{2} 1201 onwards, medieval deer park. William de Albany, licence to impark.

{3} The park is not labelled, however three small parcels of woodland shown to the south of Stoke Albany and Wilbarston more or less define the extent of the park. (1610 map prob same park as at Pipewell).

{4} In 1200 William de Albini obtained licence to enclose 'his park in Estokes, named the Lund, with all liberties belonging to it…'. The later history of the park is unknown but it is still marked on Saxton's map of Northamptonshire in 1576. The park covers a little more than 1 sq.km. and was once completely surrounded by a bank or scarp.

{5} Willaim de Albany "obtained a grant in the second year of King John of inclosing his park at Estokes, named the Lund, with all the liberties belonging to it and the privilege of hunting foxes and hares in Rockingham Forest". It appears that for this privilege he owed one 'Osturum Norvensem' (a Norwegian hawk?) and two palfreys.

SMR Note 02/08/2010: the north-west corner of the former deer park is now used as a landscape park for Stoke House (Mon 5356).
