Full Description

{1} Deserted village of Newbottle (SP 777815) lies in a N extension of the parish, probably representing the original lands of the village. Its name and position suggest that Newbottle was a secondary settlement of Harrington. Desertion in the C16th is suggested by a 1547 record of 300 sheep on the manor. By 1583 only a single house remained. Mid C19th farm buildings on the site were demolished in 1970. Air photographs show the remains of a group of small paddocks. A quantity of medieval pottery of 13th or 14th-century date has been found in the neighbourhood together with areas of tile rubble. The field in which the remains lie was known as House Ground in the early C19th. RCHM plan.

{3} The site of the DMV of Newbottle SP776814, was in poor condition in 1964. The village had a population of 4 in 1086; and was taxed with Harrington and Thorpe Underwood in 1377. The name
is perpetuated in Newbottle Bridge and Lodge but only farm buildings remain. Nothing visible on RAF APs.

{5} The indicated area is entirely arable. No traces indicative of desertion were seen.

{6} The deserted vill of Nobottle. Lot of building stone, but site under rape and difficult to see; one sherd only. Farm worker stone and pottery lie about. None S of old hedge by lodge. Stone at SP 7791 8140.

{7} A few sherds of Roman pottery have been found near the site of the deserted village of Newbottle. A quantity of early Saxon pottery has also been noted.
