Full Description
{2} The settlement earthworks are perhaps the result of movement rather than shrinkage as there are no indications in the records of a marked drop in population for the village. In 1801 207 people lived in the parish.
{3} Domesday gives a total recorded population of 20.
{4} By the early C18th there were 45 families in the village.
{6} No map shows the pre-enclosure road system of the township. However, in the 13th century a major road, the Bedford Way, seems to have run through the village and Arthingworth bridge. Its route can be seen as a well preserved hollow-way running between the furlongs north-westward. The plan-form of the village was altered between 1791 and 1817, by imparking around Arthingworth Hall. The curving form in the settlement appears largely to be a result of this re-planning.
