Earthwork of a rectangular enclosure noted in the early 18th century and depicted on early 19th century maps. Now destroyed by quarrying.

Full Description

{2} Accurate location shown on early OS mapping. Sitename: Burrow Dykes.

{3} Discrepancy with other sources over grid references.

{4} Earthworks (SP 745672), lay SW of the village but have now been destroyed. In the early 18th century they were described as a square 'with two of the sides still remaining, one of them about 80
yards in length'. By the early 19th century they had already almost been destroyed. Their date and purpose unknown. No trace remains as the area has been worked for ironstone.

{11} Earthwork of a rectangular enclosure noted. In the early C18th a square enclosure "with two of the sides still remaining and one of these is more than 80yds in length".

{13} [Centred SP 74806720] Marked "Barrow Dykes" on map in Archaeologia.

{14} [SP 74506727] The map in Archaeologia is copied from O.S. map. The original O.S. 2" map shows what appears to be a small earth work named "Burrow Dykes". Resited to agree with 2" map.

{15} The siting from the O.S. 2" {14} falls within a freshly ploughed field sown with wheat. Whilst the field is gently undulating, and hummocky in parts, no regular pattern could be discerned.
