Monument record 4591 - Possible prehistoric site, east of Spring Close
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Unclassified cropmarks were identified on aerial photographs in 1963. Geophysical survey and trial trench excavation in 2015 identified a ring ditch and possible field system, although no dating evidence was found.

Full Description
{1}Cropmark; Hollowell 1963; unclassified; Fieldname: Church Holding;
{1} Trial evaluation revealed a number of features, all of which were undated. However, the presence of a ring ditch with an eastern entrance suggests that at least some of the features may be Iron Age in date.
{2}There are several disjointed and generally weak linear anomalies which are of uncertain significance but possibly represent former ditches. These features could be contemporary with the ring ditch, but the evidence is inconclusive. A probable ring ditch, represented by an annular magnetic anomaly c10m in diameter, is located near the southern end of the field. Ring ditches can relate to several different monument types, including late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age round barrows and henges and Iron Age roundhouses. In this case there appears to be a small, east-facing, entrance gap which would favour an interpretation as a roundhouse, but the evidence is not entirely conclusive. To the immediate north of the ring ditch there is a cluster of small, moderately intense, magnetic anomalies (c10-20nT) which could represent pits.
{3} Trial evaluation revealed a number of features, all of which were undated. However, the presence of a ring ditch with an eastern entrance suggests that at least some of the features may be Iron Age in date. The spread of ditches across the site indicates that there may have also been more than one field system, but at this stage it is not possible to assert that they were contemporary due to the absence of dateable material. A number of pits were spaced some distance apart in Trench 8 and 3 and were unremarkable, except for the recovery of a small smoother stone. Whilst the provenance of the object is unknown, as a stone of non-local origin its presence is interesting as it must have been brought to this site by human hand.
