Summary

Archaeological investigation in Great Holt Field, including fieldwalking and excavation, revealed evidence of possible late Neolithic occupation, including over 100 worked flints as well as leaf-shaped and barbed-and-tanged arrowheads and possible pits.

Full Description

{1} Phase I occupation of the site is possibly late Neolithic. 102 flints were found, including leaf-shaped arrowheads, a barbed-and-tanged arrowhead, scrapers, blades and many flakes. The small pits P3 and P4 may have been associated with this phase of occupation. No pottery was found to give a more accurate assessment of the dating.
A small bowl-like depression 2ft 6ins in diameter x 4 ins deep. A further pit was 2ft 3ins in diameter x 6 ins deep. No evidence of dating was recovered from either other than pre-Roman. The pits may be associated with the ealiest activity on the site ie. Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age.
