Full Description

{1} RECT.MOATED ENCLOSURE AND CONJOINED SUBRECT.ENCLOSURES(GF8/10/84)(1);NCCAP:TL0884/5-7(+);

{3} This moat has been largely destroyed by bulldozing. Published survey (25") 1926). to be amended by Field surveyor.

{4} Moat now completely destroyed and the field grassed over, lay W. of the church on Boulder Clay at 225 ft. above O.D. No details are known.

{7} The cropmark traces of the moat described by the previous authorities and associated ditches (possibly drains and feeders to the moat), ditched enclosures and contemporary property boundaries were mapped and recorded from aerial photographs. The moat could be seen centred at TL 0887 8499 and measured approximately 67m 73m. Extending north from the moat enclosure were the cropmark traces of two further ditched enclosures which may also have been linked to the moat. To the west and south-east of the moat were the traces of two enclosed areas divided into narrow strips which may be contemporary property plots. Within those to the west are the faint traces of cultivation, and the cropmark remains of ridge and furrow could be seen extending south-west from the southern boundary of this enclosed area. Further south on the other side of the stream/drain which forms the current field boundary are the cropmark traces of two conjoined irregular enclosures at TL 0899 8487. It is not clear if these are associated with the moated site to the north. They have been recorded separately in AMIE record ().
These features were originally mapped from aerial photographs as part of the RCHME: Northamptonshire NMP project. Subsequent photographs taken by English Heritage in July 2006 have confirmed the presence of features not identified on photographs, but noted from unconfirmed sources in the original survey
