Summary

Fieldwalking survey undertaken as part of the Raunds Area Project identified a concentration of Roman pottery over cropmarks of a rectilinear enclosure. The pottery dated from the first to the fourth centuries AD, with an increased emphasis from the mid 2nd century. An area of possible Iron Age and/or Roman settlement enclosures is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Bedford Borough NMP project. They are located south of Stanwick Pastures.

Full Description

{1}TL 0052 6962. Concentration of Roman pottery and limestone rubble noted in same area as cropmarks. Broad date range extending from 1st to 4th centuries AD, with possible intensification of use in mid 2nd century. Only small quantities of pottery collected from northern part of enclosure and amorphous-shaped enclosure could denote presence of fields as opposed to settlement.

{3} An area of possible Iron Age and/or Roman settlement enclosures is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Bedford Borough NMP project. They are located south of Stanwick Pastures and centred at TL 00532 69641.
