Summary

Fieldwalking, undertaken as part of the Raunds Area Project, identified a concentration of early-middle Saxon pottery. Subsequent trial trench excavation at Rose Cottage was hampered by weather conditions, but a small number of features were identified. Most were aceramic, but two contained early-middle Saxon pottery.

Full Description

{1}Early-middle Saxon pot sherds recovered from base of topsoil;,

{2}3 separate concentations of early-middle Saxon pottery identified to north of Hargrave village; included 37 sherds of locally made pottery & 4 sherds of Ipswich ware;

{3} Concentration of early-middle Saxon pottery at Rose Cottage can be divided into three discrete clusters, each covering an area of almost 1ha within a total area of 12ha. A total of 37 sherds of locally made pottery were recovered from the concentration, together with three Ipswich ware sherds in the eastern cluster and a fourth piece forming an outlier between the three cluster.
Trial excavation undertaken in area of scatter but problems due to drought conditions & archaeological features difficult to distinguish; postholes identified both isolated & in small groups; excavation revealed only 2 with any dating evidence & these contained early-middle Saxon pottery;
