Summary

Ditched enclosures identified as cropmarks during the Northamptonshire NMP project. Further ditched enclosures and boundaries of uncertain date are recorded as cropmarks on EH reconnaissance aerial photographs in July 2011 and parts are recorded on Google Earth aerial photographs taken in 2006. Some of the cropmarks relate to boundaries marked on the Ordnance Survey first edition map but others appear to be of a different character and underlie these. It is therefore hard to date these features and they could all relate to different phases of Medieval or Post Medieval land division or alternatively those not marked on the Ordnance Survey map could be Iron Age or Roman. They extend over an area measuring 330 metres by 300 metres on either side of the Thurnwell and Barnwell parish boundary.

Full Description

{1, 2} Ditched enclosures and boundaries of uncertain date are recorded as cropmarks on EH reconnaissance aerial photographs in July 2011 and parts are recorded on Google Earth aerial photographs taken in 2006. They comprise a series of conjoined rectilinear enclosures which extend over an area measuring 330 metres by 300 metres on either side of the Thurnwell and Barnwell parish boundary.

The south-western parts of the site, centred at TL 0855 8112 were partially mapped during the Northamptonshire NMP project.

The small field defined by the boundaries now only seen as cropmarks, but marked on the historic OS map is centred at TL 0863 8112. The underlying cropmarks extend north and east and are centred at TL 0867 8118.
