Full Description
{1} Desk-based study revealed area lay within Crown Coppice of Rockingham Forest in 17th century. Woodland boundary can be recognised in present field boundaries. Study of historic maps including Enclosure Award Map 1778, Eyre's Map of 1791 and Bryant's Map of 1827. Impression that entire area may be totally wooded may be an over-simplification. Study of 1932 Field Names Map shows continuity of names reflecting woodland management - Shortwood Close, Great Shortwood and Prior Haws Treehay.
