Full Description
{1} Owned by J.Peach Hungerford Esq. Smaller emparked area is shown as extending westwards only as far as road to Sutton Basset which ran northwards past Dingley Hall and was obviously still in use at this time.
{2} The Griffins (of Braybrook) moved to Dingley where they had a mansion rebuilt in part in 1558 when the park was made and part later.
{3} Map still shows parkland extending westwards only to main road to Sutton Basset running northwards past Dingley Hall. Slight extensions eastwards are recognisable.
{8} Sir Edward Griffin was second son of Sir Nicholas Griffin of Braybrooke and a successful lawyer who became Attorney General in 1546, and later Solicitor General. He gradually acquired a considerable estate at Dingley….in 1555 he had licence to impark 72 acres. He entertained the Queen at Dingley in 1566. The Griffin family were loyal courtiers. After inheriting the estate in 1681 Lord Griffin began rebuilding Dingley but abandoned work in 1688 when he went into exile with James II. He died in the Tower of London in 1692. The estate was sold to Thomas Peach after the death of Third Baron Griffin in 1742. In 1770 after Peach's death the estate passed to his stepson J.P.Hungerford who was responsible for major rebuilding works including a new stable block [photographs show mainly building details].
{10} The original village may have been displaced and rebuilt to the south when the hall was erected by Edward Griffin in 1558-60, or perhaps more likely when the gardens and park were laid out after the rebuilding of house by Sir Edward Griffin in 1680.
{11} Edward Griffin Esq., Lord of the manor. Whole lordship was inclosed by licence - 50 acres of arable, 20 acres of pasture and 20 acres of woodland were thrown into a park with the privilege of free warren in the manor of Dingley and other adjacent lordships. [Ms. Griffin, fo.52]
{13} "Dingley Hall and Church"; shows hall on left hand side as view through parkland with smaller areas enclosed by railings; rest of village visible to right of hall.
