Description

Countywide survey. The principle aim of the survey was to examine and analyse the fabric of the great houses of the county, in order to determine both the physical development of the structure and the changing patterns of use of the different parts of each building. The study of their architectural design and interior decoration was subservient to this primary interest. Attention was concentrated on the houses themselves rather than on outbuildings, stables and garden structures. Furthermore, 19th century and later work was considered only where it imp9inged on earlier fabric and affected the interpretation of the buildings.
