Monument record 8002 - Dam and tank

Modern features identified during field visit.

{1} A rapid field visit identified features associated with a slade. Located at the head of the slade is a dam containing brick and is probably of modern origin constructed to create a "sporting" pond. Near the head of the slade and set approximately 4m west of the stream on its lower slope is a rectangular well-constructed mortared brick tank. This measures internally 2.4m x 1m by up to 0.9m deep. The short end walls slope down from to a lower north side which is built of rounded edged blocks whose internal face slopes at approximately 45 degrees. This lower side, is clearly designed as an overspill. Chalybeate deposits adhere to the outer face of the tank below the overspill. A drain hole is present in the west side of the tank facing the stream. No intake or other outfall was observed. The tank is in good condition though choked with vegetation debris. It is presumably of C19th/early C20th origin. Its function may be associated with a now lost spring source above that mapped by the OS. Its use for stock seems unlikely given its topographical location.
