Full Description

{1}Owners from approx. 1873 Plevins & Co. from 1875 Cransley Iron Co. from !876 Cransley Iron Co.Ltd., from 4th December 1889 New Cransley Iron Steel Co.Ltd.,closure in 1897. Early workings took place in the area with a view to build a furnace at Cransley being commenced in 1875 after which the name of the first owners of the quarry is heard no more. The transport means in the early years when Plevins were the owners is not known. The Cransley branch of the Midland line was not in existence then and the nearest railway line was at the Midland railway main line at Kettering. The original Cransley branch line ended at the start of the Cransley Quarries. The Cransley Ironworks were sited adjacent to the Kettering to Northampton raod at the foot of Broughton Hill. The Cransley branch line was laid along the valley to Kettering Station. The quarries were situated either side of the road from Thrope Malsor to Great Cransley. The quarries at White Hill Lodge were larger and up to 1890 seem to have been the principal source of ironore for Cransley works. The quarries ceased to operate when the ore ran out in about 1897.
