{1} Owners from 1880 Cardigan Iron Ore Co;from 1885 Lloyds Ironstone Co.Ltd; from 20th March 1893 Lloyds Ironstone Co.Ltd;from 22nd November 1949 Stewarts & Lloyds Minerals Ltd; from 29th March 1970 British Steel Corporation,Tubes Division Minerals until closure in 1980. The start of this large area of quarrying commenced with the route of the Midland Railway Kettering to Manton line passing through the Cardingan estate in the vicinity of Corby and a report was made by a mining surveyor about the feasibility of quarrying in the area. A copy of the report came to the notice of Samuel Lloyd. Quarrying commenced in the area around Corby, then a small village, in 1881. The earliest pit (Cardigan Quarry) was adjacent to the railway. The quarries continued to expand away from the village in the direction of Weldon. From 1910 to 1933 the quarries expanded to the north and south of the Rockingham - Deene road. From 1934 to 1949 more quarries were opened near to Stanion. From 1950 to 1980 further quarries were opened up past Gretton, up to and past Harringworth and southwards towards Great Oakley. In the 1950's the quarries achieved their maximum output of 60,000tons per week. The run down and closure was clouded by the lengthy strike by steelworkers, closure occurring in January 1980 the exact date unknown.
