Full Description
{1}Owners from 1873 Wingerworth Iron Co.Ltd; from 1887 R.Eldred; from 1902 Marquess of Exeter; from 1913 North Lincolnshire Iron Co.Ltd until closure in 1922. These quarries are on the Burghley House Estate the home of the Marquess of Exeter and was worked by different operators for four periods of time. The tramway from the site joined the Midland Railway at Tinwell Crossing on the Stamford to Manton line. The tramway started with horse power pulling the wagons to the siding, later a ropeway was installed and then gravity was used to pull the trucks up and down the tramway. The last owners at last used steam power from about 1915 onwards. The ore had too much sand in the ore and as a result it was of poor quality and the quarries did not continue on for very long. Closure occurred shortly after W.W.1. in about 1919 and the company closed in 1922.
