Summary
In 1086 there were two holdings at Boughton though neither were manors. One holding later gained manorial status and descedned to the Dukes of Montagu and Dukes of Buclleuch. The holdings were united in the 16th century. Analysis of the deserted settlement is difficult since so much has been removed by imparking.

Full Description
{1} Collection of photographs of buildings in the village dating from the 1970s onwards.
[2} in 1086 there two two holdings in Boughton but neither were manors. One holding later gained manorial status and descended to the Dukes of Montagu and Dukes of Buccleuch. In 1541, Sir Edward Montagu brought the whole of Boughton together under one owner. Analysis of the settlement is difficult because the greater part of the evidence for the layout of the deserted village has been removed by the imparking. Surviving earthworks only represent a small part of the village. The House was presumably built on the site of an earlier manor-house. The House as it stands has at its core a late-medieval manorial building; the house that Richard Whetehill obtained licence to construct in the late 15th century. The evidence of the manor-house and village site may suggest that it lay along a valley between Geddington and Warkton although all evidence of the road network was lost by the date of the first maps of the 18th century.
