Summary
Pottery found in 1881 during ironstone mining included late Iron Age and Roman types. Brickyard at SP961781 on 1880 OS map. Current pond appears to coincide with small area of quarrying.

Full Description
{3} Pottery, classified by George {1} as Roman was found during ironstone digging at Twywell Brickyard in 1881. The finds were made at depths between 2ft and 4ft: three vases without handles, two being of dark Durobrivian ware and having crude lugs, one vase of yellow-white ware with handle and mouth broken off, one small light nut coloured vase of fine ware, ornamented with alternate vertical lines of pointed knobs and spots and a bowl, cup and patera of Samian (or imitation Samian). At a later date, and not definitely from the same area, a grey vessel, perforated for use as a strainer, was found.
{4} Only pottery was recorded, but a settlement is indicated.
{6} The indicated site is now reclaimed and pasture.
