Summary

Charlton Mill is shown on a map of 1621 and then on subsequent maps until 1914. By 1927 it was described as 'Demolished long ago'. Remains include earthworks of the former mill-pond and ground level ruins of building.

Full Description

{1} Documentary evidence for post medieval watermill. Fieldname: Mill Hame.

{2} "Charlton Mill (Corn)"

{3} Located on the Charlton Brook, a tributary of the River Cherwell. In a ruinous state.

{4} History:
1086 Domesday Survey records Neobote with one mill rendering 2s. And another mill rendering 7s.
1549 Newbottle Court Rolls refer to miller being fined for taking excessive tolls
1724 Will of Richard Gibbord of (Croton?) left his Mills at Charlton to his son, Edward Gibbord.
1796 House and watermill let to Mrs. Elizabeth Thurland when the Newbottle estate was sold by the Earl of Thanet to W.R. Cartwright.
1874 Benjamin Moss, miller, listed under Charlton, as part of Newbottle parish
1927 Described as having been demolished 'long ago'.
Documentary sources: Shown on 1621 map of Newbottle Estate; Eyre and Jefferys' 1791 map shows it, un-named; Bryant's 1827 map marks it Newbottle Mill; 1914 1 inch OS map marks it Mill.


The remains of the corn mill are in a ruinous state, but showing that an overshot wheel was used. Earthworks of former mill-pond can be discerned although overgrown with trees. On the south side of the west end of the mill pond stonework around the wheel race indicates that the mill had an overshot waterwheel.
