Full Description

{1} Traditionally the site of the medieval manor house which was described in the early 18th century by Bridges as being partly built in the reign of Elizabeth I. It was probably pulled down soon after 1765 when the present Thenford House was built. The site is now a flat pasture field with no surface features except at the north end where there are a few low scarps.

{2} Manor house seat of great antiquity, part built during reign of Queen Elizabeth.

{3} "The old manor house stood near the church. The present mansion was erected about 1765" (when, presumably, the old manor fell into disuse).

4} (SP 51924156) Manor House (LB) (Site of)

{5} The published site {4} falls on a 30degree slope with no surface indication of terracing and a house site seem unlikely. A more probable site is some 30m to the north at SP 5191 4160 where a levelled area could have supported a building.

Enquiries locally and at the County Record Office revealed no additional siting evidence.

The suggested site is under pasture but there are no surface indications of a former residence.
