Full Description

{1} Finds of 1948 from SP59774676. The date of the cemetery is possibly Saxon or early medieval. Exposed during preparation for housing. Info H.R.C. Frost, his source unknown.

{3} Fieldwalking recovered sherds of middle Saxon pottery.

{5} "(SP 5977 4676) An early cemetery (possibly Saxon or early Medieval) was exposed by bulldozers during the preparation of the site for housing in 1948. Nothing other than bones was discovered. The site was visited by a representative of Birmingham University."

{6} Local enquiries negative regarding these inhumations. H Frost (authy {5}) contacted; he cannot recall the source of his information but is checking personal diaries and will write direct to Ao. Extra Mural Dept, Birmingham U have no knowledge of the burials. The indicated site is now occupied by a small council estate named Middlethorpe.
