Summary

Burials were noted in two locations during development in 1919. Though undated, they are likely to be Roman. A jar base found in the same area contained the remains of a cremation, possibly Conquest period, possibly of military origin

Full Description

{1} Skeletons, pottery and building remains were seen in 1919 on the site of the school (SP 68984872);

{3} At SP 68914876 skeletons were found in when the bowling green was levelled in 1919;

{5} Pottery from area of 60s buildings associated with Sponne School. A base of a large red shelly jar contained the remains of a cremation. The fabric and colour of the jar implied Conquest period. A cremation of this date is suggestive of the military.
