Summary

Documentary evidence dating to the 16th century suggests there was a hermitage at Towcester, possibly at the junction of the roads to Greens Norton and Tiffield.

Full Description

{1} A HERMITAGE IS SAID TO HAVE EXISTED HERE IN 1534.

{2} In 1534 " John Lettley, herymyte " witnessed the will of James Glastebery of Towcester ; and in February, 1557-8, John Knott of Caldecote in the parish of Towcester leaves twenty loads of stone to repair the highway " to be leyd ageynst the house wher the ermitage stode."

{3} The hermitage was probably located north of North Bridge at the junction of the old Greens Norton and Tiffield Roads with Watling Street.
