Summary

Established in 1460 as a house in which various guild chaplains of All Saints might live together, otherwise known as All Saints College or Priest's House. The site of the college is not known, but most documentary references place it opposite College Yard (now Jeyes Jetty).

Full Description

{1}Situated on west side of College Street; established as house in which various guild chaplains of All Saints might live together under definite rule; foundation charter of 1460 although functioned as such before then; college was closed in 1548;

{2}Created 1460; held property in common; no cloister or chapter house like similar foundations on larger scale; founded by vicar of All Saints William Breton who had already lived common life with 15 other stipendiary priests"….in a certain messuage or close commonly called the priest's house…." which was granted status of college; In 1528 Richard Bott gave a garden to the college in payment for masses; following closure in 1548 fellow's garden & stable in College Lane & another were sold;

{5}College of All Saints founded 1460; stood on west side of College Lane & opposite end of College Yard; College consisted of priest's house & garden. College was used as hospital during plague of 1603-5 when it was property of Abraham Ventris.

{7}Vicarage otherwise called Colledge of All Hallows;

{9}College founded 1459-60 by Wm.Breton vicar of All Saints for himself & gild chaplains of church to number of 16 or more; vicar of All Saints was always to be Warden of college; dedication c.1517 for priest to sing in St James' chapel….to board in college & keep daily serving his brethren….; dedication of W.Bownde in 1535 gives his house & garden in College Lane to use & profit of college master John Bell; Gild of St Catherine: to fraternity of St Catherine in the chapel of the new cemetery "juxta collegium"; reference of 1471;

{11}Site of college not known & although one reference places it next to St Catherine's in "tenement group" to north all other references place it opposite College Yard (now Jeyes Jetty);

{?}College was founded in 1459 with liberty of purchasing to value of 20 marks; consisted of only 2 fellows; in 1535 was worth £1.19s.4d.; gave its name to College Lane (now Street)
