Summary

Discrete scatters of Iron Age pottery have been found in an area of c20ha since forest clearance and deep ploughing in the 1950s. Finds include areas of dark soil, burnt pebbles, cobbled floors, iron slag and worked flints associated with both early and mid Iron Age pottery.

Full Description

{1} Features identified in 1956 during timber clearance included stone floor associated with Iron Age pottery and iron slag. Fieldname: Old Tun Coppice.

{2} Finds in estate office.

{3} Several discrete scatters of Iron Age material have been found over an area of at least 20 hectares, since forest clearance and deep ploughing in 1956. Finds include areas of dark soil, burnt pebbles, cobbled floors, iron slag and worked flints associated with both early and mid Iron Age pottery.

{4} Old Tun Copse, on Wakefield Estate. Heavy pebbling and Iron Age B pottery found during deforestation 1955.

{7} This site has been interpreted as a possible hillfort based on finds, viewshed analysis and a consideration of ancient trackways.

{10} Whittlewood, soilmarks of charcoal burning and iron production. Recorded on AP in this area in 1987
