Monument record 2255/1 - Site of former manor house and gardens
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Earthwork remains of Post Medieval manor house, probably built between 1553 and 1591, which replaced the earlier manor house to the south. The house still stood in 1779 when it had a small park extending southwards, but it had been demolished by the early 19th Century. To the south, further earthworks probably represent the former gardens.

Full Description
{1}Manor house site at the extreme north-west of the village near the edge of a steep slope, giving extensive views to the north at 140ft above OD. The house was probably built by John Pickering (died 1591), whose father bought the manor in 1553, to replace the earlier manor house to the south (pref ref: 1884/1). This house still stood in 1779, when it had a small park extending southwards but it had been demolished by the early 19th century.
The remains consist of indeterminate earthworks, covering about 0.5ha, which are apparently on the site of the house. Further south, long low scarps and banks perhaps represent the former gardens.
{3} Customer comment received December 2016 offering a differing interpretation: 'I wish to challenge this record. The site is not that of a manor house but of a farm house and outbuildings. The manor house was sited immediately south of the church on the site of and behind what is now the village school. It was demolished in or soon after 1771. My sources for this include the 1779 Enclosure Award, which describes the Enclosure Plan in detail including the RCHME site and the actual site of the Ancient Manor House, 1771 newspaper advertisements offering the materials and contents of the mansion house for sale and a 1652 document also describing the manor house location.
