Summary

A Romano-British pottery kiln site was found at Lodge farm during ploughing in 1960. Maculae of uncertain date and function are visible as dark soilmarks on aerial photographs in this location, though the relationship is uncertain.

Full Description

{1} Fieldwalking recovered a Romano-British coin and kiln bar, possibly associated with the villa.

{2} The kiln site was found during plough c.1960. The evidence recovered included pieces of clay resembling kiln bars. Thereis a Romano-British Villa and other enclosures located nearby.

{3} A macula of uncertain date and function is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Bedford Borough NMP project. Located in a field about 523 metres NNW of Vicarage Farm and centred at SP 49041 64966, an irregularly shaped dark soil marks is about 153 square metres in area, adjacent to which is a much smaller irregular macula of 20 square metres. There is a geographic association of these features with the Iron Age or Roman kiln site identified at this location, though the relationship is uncertain.

{6} The find spot is very close to a RO building site (SP 96 SW 11) and is probably associated.
