Abstract/Summary
McManus Taverns have been granted planning permission for a new kitchen and cellar to the rear of the Watling Well Inn, 36 Watling Street, Towcester, Northamptonshire (Application Ref. S990889P). The Local Planning Authority, South Northamptonshire Council, has applied a planning condition requiring an archaeological investigation. Northamptonshire Heritage issued a 'Brief for an Archaeological Recording Action' on 6th January 2000 requiring an archaeological watching brief to be maintained during excavations for the new extension and during the removal of existing walls and partitions. The purpose of the watching brief was to mitigate the impact of the development by recording any archaeological remains or historic fabric revealed during the works. R.J.Ivens was commissioned to carry out the watching brief on 6th January 2000, by Kevin Bradley Associates acting for McManus Taverns. The study of the historic fabric was carried out by P.Woodfield of Woodfield Associates (107 High street, Stony Stratford, MK11 1AT) on behalf of R.J.Ivens. The archaeological watching brief and building recording was carried out between 8th and 14th January 2000. The archive of photographs, drawings, notes and finds will be retained by R.J.Ivens until such time as appropriate museum/archive is available for South Northamptonshire. This report summarises the findings of the archaeological watching brief and building recording.
