Abstract/Summary
During April 1999 HAT undertook an archaeological desk-based assessment of land at Hipwell, Upper Heyford. The only known archaeology within the site is identified as cropmarks visible on aerial photos, and is confined to the extreme north eastern sector of the site. Close by a Roman villa with mosaic floors is known on the south bank of the River Nene (discovered in the late 17th century). Extensive earthworks of the shrunken medieval settlement of Upper Heyford are present to the west of the site. Associated with the latter, evidence of medieval cultivation of the vicinity (in the form of ridge and furrow earthworks) is present within the study area. Land use of the site has been agricultural over at least the last 250 years, although the lower-lying land adjacent to the Nene would have been subject to intermittent seasonal flooding.
