Abstract/Summary

A desk based study and trial excavation was carried out by Northamptonshire archaeology ahead of proposed residential development on land at The Orchard, Pebble Lane, Brackley, Northamptonshire. Examination of historic maps shows that the application area was enclosed in 1830 and had been agricultural land for some considerable time. To the south and east of the site lies a substantial Roman settlement and the core of the Saxon settlement later the Old Town of Brackley. Indications from the desk top suggest that there were mo medieval tenements in the area. Trial excavation has produced no archaeological evidence for activity before the 19th century.
