Abstract/Summary

Report entitled "Burnt Walls, Daventry, Northamptonshire, SP858612, Analytical Interpretation of Earthworks" identifies five diagnostic features of the site enabling the investigator to postulate 5 phases, described in detail, with supporting sketch plans. It is suggested that the earthwork originated as a ringwork, modified, possibly in the 12th century, to defend a stone built castle. The hollow along the south side relates to dismantled stone structures and quarrying of remains, rather than an ‘old quarry’ as shown on figure 58, Inventory of Monuments in Northamptonshire, Volume III.
