Abstract/Summary

This report is an analysis of the southern half of the circuit of the southern fort, continuing the work carried out 7th September 2001, from the gap in the defences on the west side at SP586625, through the south-west and south-east corners, to the area alongside Borough Hill Plantation at SP591625. The report contains detailed plans and a comparison with Baker’s plan c1823. The new information is as follows: 1) The ditch between the scarp and counterscarp, between SP58616252 and 58616233 is shown about 10 metres too far east on O.S. plans. 2) The scarp, ditch and counterscarp bank can be traced on the ground, for that length of the ditch between SP58616233 and SP58616222, west of the suggested course on Figure 54 OF RCHM Inventory Volume III (1981). 3) The same, for that length of the ditch from SP58626210 to 58646198, west of that suggested by RCHM 1981. 4) The counterscarp bank on the south side from SP58706193 to 59026190, and from there on the east side to SP 5906 6241, whereas previously reported to be absent. 5) An off-axis bank or mound from SP59076245 to 59106249, and other features within 100 metre square SP590624 showing several phases of defences relating to the head of the gully at SP590623.
