Abstract/Summary

This cover note accompanies a report entitled “Linear Earthworks and Alignments around Kingsthorpe – Further deliberations on the significance of Kingsthorpe”, which re-examines a number of earthworks previously notified on the SMR. The purpose of the report, in the light of it predecessor of 1st January 2002 dealing with a linear earthwork at Warmwell Leys in Dallington parish, west of Kingsthorpe, was to review other linear earthworks which, from their orientation towards Kingsthorpe, might indicate a Roman river crossing over the Brampton Nene, here rather than further south. This report also considers other evidence of Kingsthorpe in Saxon/ early Norman times which might have resulted from there being a key river crossing here. The linear earthworks reviewed included SMR 6770/0/1 in Thornton Park (SP7510 6263 to 7498 6280); SMR 5081/0/3 Kingsthorpe (SP747 631); SP7402 6197 and SP 737 6140 to 7381 6154 in Dallington, not in SMR; and SP7618 6366 to 7637 6369 to 7657 6360 to 7674 6363 in Bradlaugh Park, which has an SMR reference, not immediately to hand.
