Abstract/Summary
This assessment has been prepared to the instructions of Northamptonshire County Council. It relates to the proposed development of a new secondary and primary schools on land at Wootton Fields. The site for proposed development is land in open countryside at Wootton Fields, approximately 3.8km south east of the centre of Northampton. The planning application encloses approximately 18ha of land. The archaeology and cultural heritage assessment concluded that the findings, in summary, of the site's importance are: • The site possesses an unknown significance and potential in regard to Prehistoric and Romano-British deposits, with a definite potential for their occurrence. • The site possessed an unknown significance and potential in regard to Early medieval remains, with only a slim possibility of their occurrence. • The site contains one medieval monument (OAU 42) of Local Importance with little potential for other features of this date. • The site has a Lesser Importance in regard to Post-Medieval features (OAU 43) and historic landscape factors. Geophysical survey confirmed the site's potential for the occurrence of Prehistoric and Romano-British deposits. Ditched enclosures associated with a possible trackway, pits and possible kilns were all detected in the south-west of the development area. A ring ditch, no more than10m in diameter, with a possible opening to the south-east, was also detected.
