Abstract/Summary
A desk based assessment and walkover survey of Junction 15A of the M1 has not revealed evidence for any archaeological remains within the area that will be affected by the proposed enhancement scheme. There is evidence of extensive Iron Age and Romano British settlement with 500 metres of this site, as well as remains of possible Medieval/post Medieval ridge and furrow cultivation in the field adjacent to the existing northern A43 roundabout. Several of the field boundaries as depicted in historic maps from the 19th century have survived as mature hedgerows doing the site corridor. None of the flight of 12 scheduled lock gates on the Grand Union canal will be affected by the scheme.
