Abstract/Summary

Desk-base survey of the 30/40 Campbell Road has revealed a site from which there is no known archaeology. However the site is located in an area from which evidence, particularly of post-medieval/civil war date has been recovered. Medieval settlement in this part of the town is well represented in place name, earthwork and structural terms from Domesday onwards. The report suggests that the absence of evidence from the site, including structural remains, previous discoveries and its situation as the backlands of post medieval settlement on Sheep Street indicates that the site is unlikely to contain archaeology which will warrant preservation in situ. The report does, however, recommend further survey is desirable and that the most appropriate methodology is targeted trial trenching. The report suggests that this is best undertaken once demolition of the present 19th and 20th century buildings is complete.
