Abstract/Summary
Following an earlier desk-based assessment of the site, plots 30-40 Campbell Street, Northampton, were investigated by trial trenching for potential archaeological remains. This revealed extensive later post-medieval activity including pits and a considerable modern overburden. There were also earlier remians in the form of medieval pits and gullies and the foundation of a wall corner. As well as these datable features there were a number of pits and ditches with no dating evidence. Overall the trenching revealed medieval activity in the development area, mostly in the form of pitting, with some evidence for more substantial settlement. Any further evidence is either destroyed by later disturbance or deeply buried beyond the scope of the proposed development.
