Abstract/Summary
An archaeological watching brief was carried out within and immediately adjacent to the site of a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM No 13630) at Barton Seagrave Moats, Kettering, during remedial works on a water main. The site comprises two medieval moated medieval enclosures, fishponds and associated earthworks. In total four small test pits were machine excavated. One of the test pits truncated the north-east corner of the southernmost moat, and revealed a metalled layer which comprised part of the external bank to the moat. Immediately to the south of this, a second test pit cut the eastern causeway of the same enclosure. This revealed a 'backfill' deposit containing limestone masonry fragments, which overlaid the fill of the moat, a sterile sandy silt overlying a black organic silt that contained animal bone, wood fragments and a sherd of 14th century pottery. No archaeological remains were encountered in the two remaining pits.
