Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Northamptonshire Archaeology, in advance of development, at Wootton Fields, Northampton. Trial trenching revealed the remains of medieval and post-medieval ridge and furrow across the application area, and a possible headland, which survived as a surface feature, in the centre of the area. With the exception of a small number of undated pits and post-holes in the northern part of the site and two small gullies in the centre, the main concentration of archaeological features was located in the south-west corner, as suggested by the results of the geophysical survey. In this area there was a complex of ditches and gullies and a number of pits, producing evidence for Romano-British rurual activity, dating to the second/third centuries AD.
