Abstract/Summary
Byfield Chapel was subject to Buiding Recording prior to being converted into a single dwelling. The form of the chapel, without porch or schoolroom to the rear, is a type commonly found built by the singular efforts of a small community of both the old and the new dissidents from the later 18th century, to the middle of the 19th century. In the 19th century, those of the Weslyan sect tend to be rather simpler than the others, and the chapel at Byfield is very representative of the type. It appears from the construction, that the chapel is not a single period build, and that the main rectangle of the body was erected first followed by the addition of the vestry-schoolroom at the back. It is not possible to determine how much later this took place. The porch also appears to be an addition, and from its construction and design, would appear to be an addition of the later Victorian period, c 1880-1900.
