Abstract/Summary

The report forms an addendum to an endoscopy survey and seeks to add further detail with specific descriptions of the panelling. The first floor room at No 2 Sheaf Street contains fine panelling from the early eighteenth century that has survived remarkably intact behind later wallcoverings. Study of the room has shown it to survive on the three original walls for the full height of the room with the dado and skirting rails removed. The doors to cupboards remain in situ but nailed shut which had protected the interiors. To the left of the fireplace one of the cupboards contains a semi-circular alcove with shaped shelves, almost certainly designed to display pottery or porcelain. A pair to this cupboard is likely to exist on the right hand side of the fireplace. The original wooden cornice survives intact around the whole room and appears to retain its original colour beneath later paint layers.
